Onkar Singh Kanwar
Onkar Singh Kanwar is a well known business tycoon of India. Although, it was his father, S. Raunak
Singh who had founded Apollo Tyres in 1976, Onkar Singh Kanwar has strengthened it and made it one
of the top Tyre companies of the world. He was born in 1942 at Sialkot (now in Pakistan). He took over
the business from his father but since then has made it a multinational with six plants worldwide. When
he sealed a big deal by purchasing Cooper Tyre and Rubber a US company, he wanted to make Apollo a
global player. However, this deal did not materialize. Despite that the company remains one of the top Tyre
manufacturing companies of the world. Earlier Apollo was the 17th largest Tyre maker in the world and
now it ranks among the top 6-7 companies of the world. He is a role-model businessman among the Sikhs
because he holds a unique position in the world business. He lives in Delhi. His daughter is happily married
and stays in Singapore. His two sons are also in business, the elder being in logistic and international trading
space and the younger with him in the capacity of Vice Chairman (He is the Chairman) and Managing
Director.
