Jaspal Singh

Jaspal Singh is reputed singer of Hindi films. He was born in 1943 in a Sikh family at Amritsar. He got his school and college education in that city (graduated from DAV College). Right from his childhood he was fond of music and Mohd. Rafi was his favourite singer. He used to say that people try to copy him but nobody can recreate the same magic. He used to sing Rafi’s songs and became very popular in the city. His father wanted him to stay in Amritsar and do some job or business. However, he had a desire to go to Bomaby and fulfill his mission of becoming a playback singer. He got this opportunity when his sister got married in 1968. He visited Bombay and his brother-in-law got him introduced with music director Usha Khanna. She liked his voice and gave him a song, but that song could not become popular. In the meantime, his father bought a hotel just in front of Sri Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar and called him back to do that business. But Jaspal Singh could not put his heart in the business. His brother called him to Delhi where he was practicing as a lawyer. Jaspal Singh also did L.L.B. from MMH College, Ghaziabad and practiced for some time. When he again visited Bombay and came into contact with Sh. Ravinder Jain, who gave him an opportunity to sing songs of ‘Geet Gata Chal’, a turning point came in his life. The songs of this film became very popular. After that he sang songs for many movies for about 25 years. Some of the movies for which he sang includes ‘Nadia Ke Paar’, ‘Akhiyon Ke Jharokho Se’, ‘Sawan Ko Aane Do’, and ‘Shayam Tere Kitne Naam’. His voice was mainly suitable for Sachin. Even today, he some time goes to functions and give singing performances. He is fond of reading and spends much of his time is reading and singing programmes. Remaining in Sikh identity and reaching heights of playback singing in films is really a matter of pride for Sikhs.
