Akhand Kirtani Jatha

Akhand Kirtani Jatha was founded in 1930 by Bhai Randheer Singh, who was not only a devout Sikh, a devotional Singer of Gurbani, but also a political prisoner for 17 years. It was his firm faith in his Guru that made him bear the jail tortures including solitary confinement for days together. He always remained in high spirits (Chardi Kala). After his release, Bhai Randhir Singh rallied sangat, and engaged his companions with kirtan in which he was known to immerse himself non-stop for days at a time, hence the term Akhand Kirtan. The style of Akhand Kirtanias involves the entire congregation and everyone participates in singing along. Although, the original headquarter of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha has been at Gurdwara Bhai Randhir Singh, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ludhiana, but during all these years, a number of groups of Akhand Kirtani Jathas have emerged at different places. These places include the main centres at Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Tanda, Gurdaspur, Mallian and Phagwara. Even in foreign countries Akhand Kirtani Jathas adopting a particular style of Kirtan have become popular.
