Dr. Khem Singh Gill, a world-renowned Geneticist, Academic, Writer and Scientific Innovator, was born on 01.09.1930 in Kaleke Village, Distt. Moga, Punjab in a farmer family. He had a great difficulty for his school education as it was far away from the village. That is why he started living in a hostel from a very young age and excelled as a student in every class. As his background was agricultural and he had an interest also in the said subject, he obtained his bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in genetics and plant breeding from Punjab University. After that, he acquired various other degrees from Indian and American Universities to achieve the highest standards in his field of study. He worked in the newly setup cereals, cotton and oil seeds, research department in Kangra Distt., Punjab. In October 1962, he was selected in the newly established Punjab Agricultural University. It was in 1963 when Dr. Khem Singh Gill was selected by the University to pursue his PHD at the University of California. Gill moved to California for three years, where he studied and worked on his PHD. After finishing his PHD, he returned to India, despite his American colleagues and Professors requesting him to stay with University, which Gill noted was a large leap in the academic profession. Dr. Gill’s accomplishments did not end there, but simply continued at an impressive scale and rate. He went on to become the vice-chancellor of the university, a highly coveted position in the academic world. Even after retirement, Dr. Gill has always been consulted on related matters. He was honored with Padmabhushan in 1992. Inspite of his being highly educated and on remaining on reputed positions, Dr. Khem Singh Gill is a true Sikh to the core of his heart. He had his association with Sant Teja Singh, who always inspired him. This profound impact of Sant ji led Dr. Gill to write an English version of Sant Ji’s biography titled, “The Life of a Gurmukh”. The lengthy book details Sant Teja Singh’s life trajectory, including his spiritual path, his academic inclinations and his devotion to helping others. Dr. Gill wrote this book with great honor and as a way to further spread the message of Sant Teja Singh’s deeply important legacy. After the passing away of Sant Teja Singh, Dr. Gill in association with Baba Iqbal Singh has been actively working for the promotion of educational activities undertaken by Kalgidhar Trust (Baru Sahib Group of Academies). He is also a great writer, an interpreter of Gurbani and a preacher of Sikh tenets, values and teachings of the masters. He has travelled around the world and participates in all such programmes which are aimed at motivating the people, particularly the younger generation to come forward and engage in activities for the welfare of all. He is undoubtedly one of the great role models of the present times.
