Jagdish Singh Khehar was born on 28th August 1952. After acquiring his law degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh, he started his legal practice in Chandigarh. He earned a reputation of a fair and dedicated advocate with expertise in service matters. He was appointed a judge of Punjab & Haryana High Court on 8th Febuary 1999. In November 2009, he became chief justice of Uttarakhand High Court. In August 2010 he was shifted to Banglore as chief justice of Karnataka High Court. He was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India, which charge he assumed on 13th September 2011. When he became the Chief Justice of Supreme Court on 3rd January 2017, He became the first Sikh Chief Justice of India. Justice Khehar is known as a judge of high ability and impeccable integrity. He has given many notable decisions including a decision on Government of India’s Presidential reference before the Supreme Court in the 2G spectrum scam case. He gave a separate concurring opinion in which he warned that the government should not be under erroneous impression that it is not necessary to allocate natural resources through auction. “No part of the natural resource can be dissipated as a matter of largess, charity, donation or endowment, for private exploitation. Each bit of natural resource expended must bring back a reciprocal consideration”. His decision in Punjab & Haryana High Court regarding definition of a Sikh is also highly significant. His prestigious position has made all the Sikhs proud. We are sanguine that during his period as chief Justice, he will give some historic judgments and will take concrete steps for betterment of judicial system in the country.
