Description
Kanwar Singh Sandhu is a well known name in Punjabi journalism. Journalism was his passion right
from young age. After completing his study, he started his career as a journalist with ‘The Tribute’, the
region’s leading English daily published from Chandigarh. Soon his ability came to the notice of “India
Today”, India’s leading news magazine. During the days of insurgency in Punjab, he frequently wrote
investigative reports about the militancy afflicting the state. During this decade and half long period of
turmoil his name and fame spread far and wide. Later the ‘Indian Express’ picked him up as the resident
editor of the Chandigarh and Punjab edition of the national newspaper, where he served for six years. His
reporting and writing always covered all aspects of the story, including the often ignored opposition’s point
of view. This was appreciated by the newspaper readers of the region. When ‘Hindustan Times’ launched its
Chandigarh edition, they entrusted the resident editorship of the newspaper to Kanwar Sandhu. He served
Hindustan Times distinction for nine years. When a news channel ‘Day & Night News’ was launched on
11th 2010 from Chandigarh, S. Sandhu became the Managing Editor of this channel. The said Tri-lingual
channel (Punjabi, Hindi and English). This Tri-lingual Chenaal 24 hour was different from other channel
in the region as it gave full coverage to divergen political view points and not supported any particular
party. Although, the channel was becoming popular, the politicians in power stopped supporting it and for
want of any advertisement and sport the channel had to be closed in due course. It is generally said that S.
Sandhu did not accept the view of the person in power and due to this pleasure had to leave the channel. In
April 2013, Kanwar Sandhu launched a new phone-in program for the audiences in North America. The
name of the show was “Hello North America”. This program became instantly very popular all across its
viewing area. Kanwar Sandhu was flooded with lots of supportive calls, facebook messages and e-mails from
all over the world. Most callers were highly critical of the Punjab Government. This again became a cause
of annoyance for the politicians and Sandhu again had to pay the price for his honesty, fair mindness and
brilliant. However, these qualities of S. Sandhu make him a role-model for all those who believe in truthful
and fiar journalism.
