Description
Baba Amar Singh, originally named Sarup Singh, was born on 1st November, 1942 at Chakar Village,
in the District Ludhiana of Punjab in the house of S. Bakhtawar Singh and Mata Bhagwan Kaur. However
he lost his parents at a young age of 8 years. There after, his paternal uncle took him under his custody. His
paternal uncle used to visit Nanaksar Darbar, Kalera Village at Jagraon of Ludhiana District, Punjab and
he took the child along with him. The child was so much impressed by the saintly congregations under
the spiritual guidance of Baba Ishar Singh ji (successor of Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji). It was in this spiritual
atmosphere that Sarup Singh got trainging of Gurbani Singing, playing of harmonium and performing
Sewa of Sath Sangat Ji. His teachers included Giani Kehar Singh, Bhai Jai Ram Singh and S. Avatar Singh
Naaz (who gave training at Delhi). After becoming Amritdhari, Sarup Singh became Amar Singh, and he
remained associated with Baba Isher Singh ji till Baba Isher Singh lived in this world. He toured with him
to several places for Dharam Parchar. after his stay of 14 years at this place, he was sent to Barundi, the
maternal village of Baba Isher Singh Ji to perform sewa and Kirtan. He was now known as Baba Amar
Singh Ji. The devotees there and the adjoining villages virtually compelled Baba Amar Singh Ji to remain at
Barundi to carry on with his preaching of Sikhism. In 1972 Baba ji went to England on the request of some
devotees and setup Gurdwara’s, Libraries and hall for social functions at different places. Baba ji went to
various other countries also such as America, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia and established Nanak
Saab Gurdwara’s at many places. However Baba ji’s major contribution as a preacher of Sikh religion relates
to strengthening of educational base for the community. It is this contribution in the field of education
which makes him a role model. The schools in London and Delhi (Guru Nanak International Public School,
Greater Kailash Part 2) setup by him are among the best ones to impart the education relating to Sikh
religion. Baba ji has a vision to educate the Sikh community both formally and spiritually. His main object
is to link the Sikh Sangat with formal education and Sikh religious knowledge. He has always stressed on the
need to acquire higher education in this very competitive world of ours. According to him the need to learn
and understand “Gurbani” (Sikh religious scriptures) is of utmost importance. It is only through education
that one can truly understand the teachings embodied in the Guru Granth Sahib. It will also facilitate further
and deeper research. Baba Isher Singh Ji also used to encourage good religious education among children.
Baba Amar Singh Ji is following his foot steps by establishing various religious educational institutions
all over the world to spread Sikh religious knowledge, culture and traditions. Besides this Baba Ji has also
undertaken other projects to give the new generation higher education. That is why he wants to open more
and more educational institutions and to encourage various community development programmes in India
as well as overseas.
