Description
Dr. Harinder Singh Bedi is a renowned Cardio Vascular Endovascular & Thoracic Surgeon with outstanding achievements not only in his own sphere of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), but
also in the sphere of social service and spiritual pursuits. With his brilliant career starting from school
days in Dehra Dun, he did his MBBS from MGM Medical College Indore, where he was declared best
outgoing student with 10 gold medals to his credit. Dr. Bedi enriched himself with further qualifications and
experience with MCh (Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery) in 1988 from PGI Chandigarh .
He then worked in the St. Vincents Hospital, Sydney, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children,
Sydney Australia where he acquired advanced expertise in bypass surgery, heart transplant and in the
management of complex congenital heart disease .
He has held important positions at the Escorts Heart Institute New Delhi, and the original flagship
Fortis Heart Institute Mohali where he was senior most cardiac surgeon and was instrumental in starting
the surgical wing . He then rejuvenated the CTVS department Christian Medical College (CMC) & Hospital
Ludhiana where he joined as the Head of CTVS. After retirement he has now taken over as the Chairman
Cardiac Sciences of the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital in Ludhiana .
Besides being an observer in Robotic Heart Surgery in Columbus University, Ohio, USA, he has
conducted more than 17,000 open heart surgeries with results matching international standards. He
has several innovations in surgery including the first use of the radial artery in the leg, the first series of
multivessel beating heart surgery and first minimally invasive heart surgery using a Cath Lab in OT. These
accomplishments were hailed by the medical world and figured in Limca book of world records 2000 and
again in 2008. He devised the ‘Bedi Cooling Turban’ used to protect the brain during surgery and he also
has a surgical technique named after him – the “Bedi LIMA buttress” which protects surgical patients from
complications .

The multifaceted personality of Dr. Bedi is evidenced by his hobbies, interest and social and spiritual
activities. He is a music and poetry lover and an active trekker (he was the only participant from Punjab in
the Delhi Marathon 2005). He is an excellent speaker and prolific writer. He was the only presenter from
Asia at the prestigious STS (Society of Thoracic Surgeons) meeting in San Diego, USA (available at www.sts.
org as a video). Again, he was the only presenter from India at the 21st European Association of CardioThoracic Surgeons meet in Geneva in September, 2007 (www.eacts.org). His international publications
include 15 from Punjab including a Chapter in the book ‘Myocardial Protection’ published by Blackwell
publishing New York in January, 2004.
He is on reviewer board of International journals. His writings and speeches are not confined to medical
subjects only, he does equal justice on many other subjects including Sikh Religion. Belonging to a Gursikh
family, he is himself a true Sikh. His father Major KMS Bedi (retd.) took active part as a paratrooper in
the Indo Pak and Indo China wars and was decorated for his valor. His mother is a home maker, an
academician and a retired teacher. When he explains Sikh religion to foreign delegates, his preaching
capacity becomes crystal clear. No wonder that he finds a Special mention in publication from World Sikh
Forum New York under the heading – “Sikhism and Science”. His charitable activities are in conformity
with the Sikh concepts of ‘Sarbat Da Bhala’ these activities include his active association with NGOs in
operating poor children with heart problems free of charge. The ever smiling doctor with compassion in
his heart presents himself as a true Sikh role model. Thus, he has been honored by different authorities &
organizations. He has received the Punjab Govt. Civil Award – Parman Patra 2001 – at Independence Day
function in recognition of his contributions to cardiac surgery and for bringing international level cardiac
surgical care to the people of Punjab; the Lifetime Achievement Award by Governor Haryana in New Delhi
on 22nd March 2009, the ‘Pride of Punjab’ award by CM Punjab in Dec 2013, and Punjab Gaurav award by
Kes Sambhal Parchar Sanstha in 2015.
