Dr. M.S. Gill
Description
Dr. M.S. Gill, an Indian Politician of the Indian National Congress and presently Punjab’s representative
in Rajya Sabha was born on 14.06.1936. He joined I.A.S. in 1958 and was allotted Punjab cadre before the
State was trifurcated and two new states Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were created out of it. He held
various important posts including some in present day Haryana (eg. SDM Mahindergarh) and Himachal
Pradesh (eg. DC Lahaul-Spiti). He worked as Agriculture Secretary of Punjab from 1985-1987. He remained
Election Commissioner and succeeded Shri T.N. Seshan as Chief Election Commissioner of India (1996-
2001). His major achievement in the Election Commission was the introduction of Electronic Voting
Machines with a view to curb mal practices to a great extent. He was awarded with a Padma Vibhushan for
his this appreciable work. When he became Member of Rajya Sabha in 2008, he was inducted as Minister
of Youth Affairs and Sports. In the second term, when the Congress Party won the Indian election in 2009,
he was again made the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports. His major achievements and the high positions
held by him make him a role model. The fact that he played a vital role in bringing Electoral reforms makes
all the Indians and particularly the Sikhs proud of him.
