Gurdwaras at Greater Kailash in Delhi
Description
Two other Gurdwaras of Delhi which need a mention are located in Greater Kailash area of Delhi. One of
these Gurdwaras known as Pahadi wala Gurdwara in Greater Kailash 1 is very popular among the devotees
because of many reasons. The first reason is that apart from having spacious hall for congregation, this
Gurdwara has a big ground where marriages and other social functions are organized. This provides a great
facility to the community for social gatherings. The other two
features of this Gurdwara which make it a landmark are the
school attached to it and Mata Gujri medical centre. When this
Gurdwara was founded by the Sikh community represented by
the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in the early 60’s; the idea and need
to have a School and a Medical Centre in the same precincts
was there in the mind of committee members. However, it
was in the 80’s when the open space ground was started to be
given for marriages that the committee got sufficient resources
to realize its dream of having a school and a medical centre.
It was decided to name the two institutions after the name of
Mata Gujri who was the wife of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh
Bahadar and mother of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh
Guru and grand-mother of his four sons. Mata Gujri is known
for her spiritual righteousness, human dignity and sacrifices,care, love and devotion to the poor and all alike and dedicated
her life towards them.
Although, the medical centre (contact

no. 29233690) was started on a small scale, now after 2002, it is functioning in a newly constructed building
and is providing various facilities like Outdoor Patient Facility (OPD) in the Departments of General Medicine
/ Gynaecologist / Eyes / Orthopaedic / Surgery / Skin / Dental / Physiotherapy / ENT / Homeopathy /
Chest and Radiology etc. Anywhere between 500 to 600 outdoor patients visit the Medical Centre daily from
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
These patients are attended, examined and provided treatment from a panel of 50 or
so doctors who are competent, qualified and specialists in their respective areas.
In addition the Medical Centre also provides services and facilities in Radiology
(X-Ray), Pathology Lab, ECG and Ultrasound, Cataract Surgeries etc. The school
is providing education to children up to CBSE 10+2. S. Sawran Singh Bhandari
and S. Gulshanveer Singh are the President and Secretary of the Gurdwara. The

Another Gurdwara in Greater Kailash 2 is very popular among the devotees. It
is situated near N block market in that area. A large number of Sikhs had shifted
from Kabul when the political condition in Afghanistan did not remain congenial.
When they came to Delhi they made Gurdwaras wherever they settled in good
number. For example they have one Gurdwara at Tilak Nagar where there is a
good concentration of their population. The Greater Kailash 2 Gurdwara is also
one of such Gurdwaras. Although, a school and a medical dispensary are attached
to this Gurdwara also, its fame mainly rests upon “Manji Sahib” which is 400
years old. It was brought here by Afghan Sangat from Kabul (Afghanistan). S.
Tarinder Singh and S. Manjeet Singh are the President and Secretary of this
