Jasbir Kaur Bawa
Jasbir Kaur Bawa, born and broughtup in Canada, had graduated from McMaster University in
Hamilton, Canada with an Honors B.A in Political Science. She further studied Law from Howard University
School of Law in 2003 and began her legal career as an attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom
LLP in their securities litigation department working on government investigations. She later moved to
Bingham McCutchen, LLP as a Telecommunications, Media and Technology Associate. There, she assisted
telecommunications firms with regulatory matters before the Federal Communication Commission and
state public utility commissions. Additionally, she worked on corporate matters and telecommunication
litigation. She first joined the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund as a legal volunteer in the summer of 2006. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Kaur Foundation, a local Sikh group focused on education advocacy. In 2009, Ms. Bawa joined the faculty of Howard University School of Law.
She currently serves as a General Counsel for an Information Technology company on a consultant basis
working on general corporate and employment matters while teaching at Howard University, School of
Law. She teaches first year law students Legal Research, Reasoning and Writing and second year students
Appellate Advocacy. Her responsibilities include drafting various contemporary legal civil rights problems
for her students. Professor Bawa has drafted problems focused on civil rights of minority groups in
employment discrimination (Title VII) and the criminal realm, including topics such as prison reform,
sentencing enhancements, and warrantless use of GPS devices on minority populations. She has published
a number of articles in support of the community and has taken many mini courses for enlightening the
people about Sikhs, their values, teachings etc. She is really a role model for the youngsters, rendering very
useful services as a member of Broad of Director of SALDEF.
