Nirpal Singh Shergill, belonging to Patiala, is now settled in London. He is a journalist by profession.
Being a strong believer in Indo-British business partnership on equality basis, he has mainly dealt with issues
concerning the NRI’s living in UK and other foreign countries. Although, he went to UK as early as 1996,
he studied there for a good number of years. In 1981, when he started his business of a direct importer of
cultural, bridal and festival goods from India under the name Shergill and company, a sol proprietary. He also
started his career as a journalist by publishing a monthly magazine “The Politics” in London dealing with the
Indian political issues. Since then, not only his business has expended, his journalist sphere has also become
very large. He is the Managing Director, MAJA Industrial Exports (P) Ltd., Patiala (Punjab), India (Direct
exporters to the U.K.). He has written more than thousand articles on various subjects concerning Indians
Abroad. By writing on such subjects like terrorism, extremism, separatism, immigration and emigration,
he has been working as a bridge between the Punjabis living abroad and in India. He is Resident Director/
Chief Media Advisor/India Recruitment Officer of Highly reputed UK-based Universities/Educational
Institutes. Further, he is Overseas Special Correspondent (since 1985) AJIT NEWSPAPER,INDIA, World’s
No.1 Punjabi Daily www.ajitjalandhar.com. What made him very famous was his starting of publishing an
international directory of prominent Indians, especially Punjabis, settled in various parts of the world. This
international publication is now in its 13th edition and has expanded to include addresses of all embassies
and high commissions in New Delhi, Indian diplomatic missions abroad, investigative and analytical articles
contributed by persons specialising in the Indian Diaspora and other information regarding India and the
European Union. It also highlights the new developments in the Indo-European relations and the India-UK
business partnership. He is a Sikh role model not merely because of his being a prominent businessman
and an eminent journalist, but also because of his keen interest in Sikh Affairs, activities and welfare. He
has a good knowledge of Sikh history and has attended many international seminars and conferences
relating to Punjabi language, journalism and Sikh Religion. Widely travelled Mr. Shergill has inspired many
journalist to write in their mother tongue Punjabi. It is in consideration of his services that he has won many
awards and honors including by mayor of Dart Ford, Kent, UK, by The Jathedar, Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, on
25th September 1995, in appreciation of compiling, editing and publishing an International directory of
Gurdwaras and Sikh organizations, by Guru Gobind Singh Foundation, Chandigarh, by Chief Minister of
Punjab at Fatehgarh Sahib in appreciation of special edition of Shergill’s Indians Abroad and Punjab Impact
published on 300th Shahidi Divas of Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri ji on 25th December, 2004. His articles
often appear in ‘Ajit’. His bold views and command over language make him a role model in the sphere of
Journalism.
