Professor Surinder Singh, is a gifted Musician, Composer and Teacher, who founded Raj Academy of
Asian Music in 1994 in London. This Academy, presently known as Raj Academy Conservatories is an
International Institution for the study and practice of Classical Indian Music and Gurmat Sangeet of the
Sikh Musical Tradition. S. Surinder Singh, having born in 1969 in Kapurthala District of Punjab, had a
strong inclination for Classical Indian Music right from his very childhood. He gained his B.A. Economics at
NJSA College, Kapurthala. His early education included the History of Indian Music and the practice of its
complex rhythmic and melodic structure. His early teachers Mahant Ajit Singh and Giani Najar Singh had
developed his interest in traditional Indian Instruments. During his teenage years he got training in singing,
composing and musicology from Pandit Kharayti Lal Tahim of the Delhi Gharana under the Guru-Shishya
parampara system. In 1989, he took his Masters degree in Classical Indian Music and then obtained an
M.Phil degree from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Having gained his professional qualifications,
Surinder Singh refined his expertise still further by studying the sarangi, a traditional Indian multi-stringed
Instrument, with Ustad Surjeet Singh, himself a master student of the internationally renowned Pandit
Ram Narayan. With his proficiency as a Sarangi player, he has revived the traditional Sikh instruments like
Saranda, taus, rabab and dilruba. He has popularized Sikh music by bringing the concept of the Naad Yoga.
Naad Yoga is a form of inner attainment; rather than simply using music for entertainment, it masters the
influence of sound to keep the practitioner in premium health on every level – physical, mental, emotional
and spiritual. Raj Academy has nurtured an international community of dedicated teachers, musicians and
yogis with many graduates throughout Europe and North America, thanks to Professor Surinder Singh’s
endless generosity with his teachings and his determination to share ancient Indian sound healing modalities
on a worldwide scale. A continual programme of concerts and teaching activities takes Professor Surinder
Singh and his musicians to many parts of the world, including Europe, the USA, Canada and India. For his
enormous contribution in the field of classical music and Gurmat Sangeet, he is undoubtedly one of greatest
role models in this field.
