Gurbir S. Grewal

Gurbir S. Grewal has been recently voted unanimously by Senate Judiciary Committee to become Bergen County Prosecutor for five-year term. He is 43 years old and has already gained rich experience as Chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark. Previously, he worked in private practice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn. He has investigated good number of cases ranging from narcotics distribution and Ponzi schemes to cyber crimes. One such investigation resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old New York man who had advertised his services as a hitman on the dark web, a part of the Internet that requires special software to access. As he has been appointed on the present post by Governor Christie, he had recused himself from a pending investigation into allegations that Governor Christie had broken state law during the George Washington Bridge lane closures. He said he was advised to do so by ethics officials at least in part because he was appointed by Christie. There is another case against Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox condoning use of racial profiling as a police tool. The investigation ultimately led to Fox’s suspension and demotion. He released the results of his office’s investigation in August, saying Fox’s email “explicitly violated” a 2005 state attorney general’s directive prohibiting racially influenced policing. He also said the investigation did not find “any substantiated instances” of racial profiling by Wyckoff officers. But his office implemented mandatory training programs for Wyckoff officers on topics such as cultural awareness, the prohibition on racially influenced policing and de-escalation tactics. These cases make it clear that as the county’s top law enforcement officer, Grewal is responsible for leading the county’s most complex criminal investigations, overseeing municipal police departments and coordinating regional task forces. When such a responsibility is entrusted to a Sikh officer, his honesty and the faith reposed in him by the authorities, make all the Sikhs proud. He is known as amazing adminstator, a traffic laywer, a great manager and a wonderful person. This role model gursikh living in New Jersey is quite expert in his work and has confidence to say “It’s a great office already,I want to make sure it’s the best office in the state if not the country.”
