Guru Angad Dev Ji – The Worthy Successor
Guru Nanak broke another prevalent tradition of passing succession to the sons and started the tradition
of selection of the best successor for strengthening the new faith. Guru Angad Dev Ji, who was earlier
known as Bhai Lehna Ji, succeeded in winning the love and confidence of his Master and so ascended
his spiritual throne in 1539 A.D. He was born on March 31 1504 at Matte di Sarai in Mukatsar district Punjab. His father’s name was Baba Pheru Ji and his mother was called with different names like Mata
Ramo Ji/Daya Kaur Ji. He carried forward the mission and thoughts of Guru Nanak both in letter and
spirit. He introduced Gurmukhi Script for the benefit of the common people. He started wrestling places for the youth to make them aware about good health and healthy living. He strengthened the langar tradition and a large number of devotees started partaking food together ( called pangat in Sikh religion)Bibi khivi Ji, wife of guru Ji looked after the activities of langar. This fact finds a mention in one of the vaars included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Ramkali Ki vaar by Satta Ji and Balwand Ji ) He wrote 62 slokas which are
integral part .of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He left for his heavenly abode ( joti jot samauna) on March 28 ,1552 at Khadur sahib, Amritsar.
