Navkiran Singh, a prominent lawyer of Punjab, was born on 6th June 1961 at Ambala. His school
education was mainly at Chandigarh, but he got his LLB Degree from Jaipur University. His father S.
Gurmukh Singh was also a prominent lawyer. He started his legal practice in Punjab and Haryana High
court at Chandigarh in November 1986. During those days a lot of Sikh youth were being killed in false
encounters or were being falsely implicated in Punjab and were languishing in jails and so he decided to
serve them by providing them free legal aid. He used to visit jails in Punjab and after meeting the Sikh
political detainees he started getting their legal grievances addressed in the high court. He documented the
cases of Sikh youth who had been abducted by the Punjab Police and Para military forces and presented
their cases before United Nations Sub Committee in 1991 & 1992 at Geneva and 1994 & 1995 at New York.
He provided free legal aid to the Sikh political prisoners who were being sought to be extradited from
U.S.A, Canada and United Kingdom and appeared as an expert witness in foreign courts. He also has the
distinction of being one of few Indian lawyers who was taken on the Legal defense team which was funded
by Canadian legal system to provide legal defense to the accused of the infamous case of AIR INDIA crash
case, trial of which took place in Vancouver, Canada. He lived in Canada for 7 months to provide the legal assistance to the accused. In 1991 after 4 of his Lawyers Colleagues were killed by the Punjab Police, he and
his lawyer friends formed a human Rights group by the name of “Lawyers For Human Rights International”,
through which they started initially defending the human rights lawyer colleagues, but, then the group
dedicated its legal services to the humanity and since 1995, is providing free legal aid to poor and indigent
and filing PIL’s. He also successfully was able to put Jagdish Tytler. M.P, accused of Sikh Genocide on trial
in the year 2012 as counsel of Lakhwinder Kaur, whose husband was killed by a mob led by Congress leaders
on 1st Nov 1984.Navkiran Singh also headed a team of Lawyers to Sharjah U.A.E in the year 2010 to help
13 Indians who were facing death penalty in U.A.E court and after meeting the detainees released a report
on their mistrial which was endorsed by Amnesty International and the mistrial attracted world attention.
Navkiran Singh is dedicated Anti Death penalty activist and has been able to save lives of prisoners facing
death sentence in various parts of India and his group works in close coordination with international bodies
like “World Coalition Against Death Penalty”. His services as an advocate and a human rights activist are
unique in the sense that they have a human gursikh approach for all the human beings, irrespective of their
religion, cast or nationality. He has rendered such noble services not only in India, but also in various other
countries as mentioned above. That is why he is quiet popular and has emerged as a true sikh role model
in his profession. He possesses many gursikh qualities like humanity, humility, sweet speech and a helping
attitude. All these humanitarian asepects of his personality make him a real role model. He is presently living
with his family at Chandigarh. His son S. Navratan Singh is also an advocate following in the foot steps of his
