Waris Singh Ahluwalia

Waris Singh Ahluwalia is a Jewellary Fashion Designer, Actor, Model and a Social Worker living in New York, U.S.A. He was born in Amritsar, where his father was a Professor in Guru Nanak Dev University. His father decided to shift to U.S.A. when Waris was only 5 years old. His early education was in a school in Brooklyn. During his school education, he was many times bullyed for his Sikh look, which, under the influence of his devout Sikh parents, he was determined to maintain. Although, he changed his subjects from Medicines to Law and then to Media to settle in life, but ultimately, it was his love for Arts and Music which established him in his business. He wanted to establish his own business and that was Fashion Jewellery Business with which he ultimately landed. The artistic look of the rings which he got made and sold from his Fashion Shop, “House of Waris” made him quite popolar. After that he visited many places related to Fashion items including the most famous and lavish boutiques of Maxfields where Hollywood Stars were generally coming for selection of their clothes, jewelery and vintage items. It was here only that he got a chance in a film, “LIFE AQUATIC”. After that, he worked in many movies and as a model for high brand concerns. He collaborated with many business organizations not only for earning, but also for charity. To name a few collaborations, mention may be made of BENJAMI CHO, Yoox.com, Colette in Paris and Illesteva Eye wear, a line of Sunglasses. When in 2013, Waris was featured in a Gap, Make Love campaign advertisement, he that received the attention of the consumers and the Media World over. As a Gursikh, he has launched and associated himself with many projects for making the people of the World familiar with Sikh identity and principles. When he was not allowed to broad a flight by Aeromexico as he refused to remove his turban, he asserted the Sikh identity. Even when Aeromexico apologized, he insisted that they should ensure that they will train their staff about this identity and educate them about Sikh religion. This being a great step on his path, Waris Ahluwalia becomes a role model for all the Sikhs who want to tell the world about their identity and their religion. Although Ahluwalia has been honoured by various persons and organizations, a rare honour has been bestowed upon him by New York city Mayor Bill De Blesto. The Mayor invited him to his residence on 19th October 2016 to celebrate the festival of Diwali and gave him a proclamation declaring October 19, 2016 in the city of New York as Waris Ahluwalia day. He praised Ahluwalia’s talents of being a Fashion designer, writer, actor, model and above all a proud Sikh with his turban. He said that wherever this role-model goes he sends a powerful message to the city, the country and every one of countering ignorance and advocating religious understanding and tolerance. This is a great compliment indeed.
