Guru Ram Das Ji

The original name of the 4th guru on the spiritual throne of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was Jetha Ji.He was born on 4th October 1534 at Chuna Mandi,Lahore. As he lost his parents at a very early age, he moved to Basarke , where he came into contact with Guru Amar Dass Ji. He further moved along with guru Ji to Goindwal where he rendered service for the construction of Baoli.It was the devotion and the service of Bhai Jetha Ji, which attracted the attention of Guru Amar Das Ji and The latter married his daughter Bibi Bhani Ji to him. When he became the fourth Guru, he was named as Guru Ram Das Ji. He laid the foundation stone of the new city Amritsar. He, like his predecessors carried forward the healthy traditions of the Sikhs including Guru-ka-Langar. He strongly condemned unwanted traditions in the society like the caste-system and pilgrimages to so called religious places and many other prevalent superstitions. He wrote 679 hymns in 30 ragas and all are a part of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji.His compositions include one hymn which prescribes the daily routine of a Sikh (Guru sat guru Ka jo Sikh akhai) He also wrote ‘Lavan’, which are recited at the time of marriage of every Sikh. He nominated his youngest son Guru Arjan Dev Ji as the 5th Guru of the Sikhs on account of his ability and saintliness. He left for his heavenly abode (Joti-Jot Samaona) on September 16, 1581 at the age of 46 years in Amritsar.
