As the Sikhs have a deep connection with music, their love for musical instruments has also been there since the time of the Gurus. Talk of any musical instrument, and there will be Sikhs who are excellent in playing that instrument. Flute is generally associated with Lord Krishna and in the present time a numbers of Indian and foreigners also, known flute players. When we talk of a turbaned Sikh flute player, the name of S. Baljinder Singh (Ballu) comes to our mind. Born on April 21 1972 in Indore (M.P.), Baljinder graduated in Civil Engineering from S.G.S.I.T.S. Indore. Although he worked as a Civil Engineer, but his inside was not satisfied and he made flute playing as His favorite pass time.Gradually he developed love and got guidance and misprision of Sh. Gauri Shankar Yadav, blind musician. Baljinder had to work hard as his father was in transport business and he alone in the family was a music lover. The family wanted him to be a successful engineer but destiny made Baljinder the melodious Sikh, the popular Indian flutist.
He got further musical lesson from another musician Sh. Kamal Kamble. When he started giving performances, he attracted large audience by arousing interest of the common man in flute. Baljinder’s dedication and talent allowed him to gain eye catching popularity. He has received many awards but gets emotional about his ‘First Gold Medal at National Youth Festival held at, Chennai-India. Since then he hasn’t looked back and continues to receive recognition of his outstanding performances and justify his ability to charm the common masses. He was also awarded with ‘Soor Shri’ (by Ushna Raktha-an institute involved in promoting Indian music & culture). ‘The melodious Sikh’ tours india and has many personal music releases focused on Indian Classical music, Instrumental Flute and Music for Vaastu. He has innumerous professional recordings with artists of repute like Ravindra Jain, Suresh Wadekar, Udit Narayan, Anuradha and Kavita Poudwal and many more.With his charming personality and attractive way of playing on flute, he has made himself the most sought after flute player. His passion to music and ardent desire to propagate music led to establishment of a ‘Music Studio’ in the name of ‘Soor Taal’, which is allowing him to further understand and experiment with music. The melodious Sikh has definitely become a role-model for all music lovers.
