The Role of Singh Sabhas

The role played by various Singh Sabhas in the propagation of Sikh religion also needs a specific mention. The term Singh Sabha in Punjabi means an assembly of Sikhs. When, towards the end of 19th century, the Sikhs had untidily started a movement for educating their community regarding their religion and raising their moral, that movement had been named as Singh Sabha Movement. This movement was aimed at protecting the Sikhs from fallowing under the influence of Hindus and Christians Missionaries. Whereas the Hindu Leaders like Swami Dayanand treated the Sikhs as a part of Hindus, the Singh Sabha Leaders wanted to emphasise the separate identity of Sikhs. The Christians were converting the people to Christianity and some Sikhs were also attracted towards them. Although, the movement had ended with the creation of various institutions like SGPC, Chief Khalsa Diwan, Khalsa College etc., the name Singh Sabha still continued to address the various units which went on working in this regard and the various Gurdwaras Management Organizations which were registered under the respective laws of the places where they came into being.
