Jagmeet Singh is a Politician in Ontario State of Canada and the Deputy Leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party. He was born on 02.01.1979 in Scarborough, Toronto. His parents S. Jagtaran Singh Dhaliwal (a Psychiatrist) and Harmeet Kaur (a Teacher) had migrated from Punjab. S. Jagmeet Singh had his education in Toronto where he did his graduation in Biology from Universtiy of Western Ontario and then his L.L.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in 2005. He worked for sometime as a Criminal Defence Lawyer with a prominent firm (Pinkofsky’ Law Firm) and then started his own private practice in Brampton. He started making people aware of their legal rights by holding Seminars and also counselled them for such a protection. This made him popular and then he decided to enter politics. He could not succeed in 2011 Federal Election, but he won in the same year Ontario Provincial Election as the NDP Candidate for the riding of Bramalea-Gore-Malton. By winning this election, he became the first Ontario NDP MPP to represent the Peel Region as well as the first Turban-wearing MPP in the 40th Parliament of Ontario. He was appointed as the NDP CRITIC for The Attorney General of Ontario and for the Consumer Services. Since then he has been a member of this Assembely. Apart from introducing some important bills for bringing relief for the people, it was he who raised voice against 1984 Anti Sikh Riots and Operation Blue Star. He also made a statement against Govt. of India’s decision for death penality for Balwant Singh Rajwana and called for Canada and Ontario to urge India to abolish the death penalty. In December 2013, legislation introduced by Singh to have the month of April recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in the province of Ontario was passed by the Legislature. Singh said, “This will be an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about Sikh Canadians and the important role that they have played and continue to play in communities across Ontario. When he was elected again in the 41st Parliament, he was appointed as Deputy Leader and this time again he was the first Turbaned Sikh to hold Deputy Leader position in Canada. As he is a bold speaker in the Parliament, it is believed that in the 42nd Parliament, he may become the leader of the Party. Considering his services for the people of his riding in general and for the Sikh community in particular, he has been honored by various organizations. Toronto Star had named him in 2012 as one of the top 12 personalities and “A Trailblazer in Ontario Politics”. In 2012, he was recognized by the World Sikh Organisation of Canada and honored accordingly. In 2013, he was awarded the Sikh of the Year by SEWA. In 2013, Singh was also recognized by Toronto Life as a “Rising Star” and as one of t he top20 best dressed residents of the City. He wears bespoke suits that he designs himself. Last, but not the least, this Gursikh Role Model is also a mixed martial arts specialist who has competed in the U.S. and Canada in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
