Dr. Kartar Singh Lalwani

Dr. Kartar Singh Lalwani, a Sindhi in Sikhi saroop, stationed in U.K. was born in Karachi in 1931. His father was a successful Pharmacist and had good business. However, after partition, in 1947 the family was forced to shift to Bombay. Although the family had lost everything in Pakistan, they did not lose heart. Dr. Kartar Singh studied Pharmaceutical Science in London, Germany and India. When he moved to London in 1956, he did his Post Graduation in Pharmacy at King’s College, London and then a Doctorate in Medical Chemistry at Bonn University in West Germany. He first associated with his brother Gulu Lalwani (and Partap Singh Lalwani) and founded Binatone in 1958. This company originally imported radios from Hong Kong. Later on he setup his own pharmaceutical company named Vitabiotics. He worked very hard and produced quality products and made his company a big one. Presently it exports to more than 100 countries and has 20 UK brands, many of them being No. 1 in the market. For global expansion of his business to countries like Egypt, Indonesia, USA etc. he associated with him his son Tej, who is proving a pillar of strength for him. The Lalwanis are presently among the richest persons of UK. However, Dr. Kartar Singh Lalwani is a role-model as his vitamins and health drinks are now sold all over the world. Starting from scratch, he setup an empire and in April 2013, Vitabiotics became the first British company to receive the Queen’s Award for Innovation in Vitamin Research. In the same year Vitabiotics became the UK’s Number One vitamin supplement company and Boots named the firm ‘Overall Supplier of the Year’ in all categories. In 2014 Dr. Kartar Singh Lalwani was awarded a Professorship from France’s leading centre of dermatological excellence, CERT, University of Franche Comte (Part of one of Europe’s oldest 900 years old medical institutes at St. Jacques, Besancon). The prize was given for Dr. Lalwani’s ground-breaking perfectil skin research. He is a role-model not merely because he owns the largest vitamin company in Great Britain, but also because of his love for his religion. He says that “My faith has influenced me in developing my science philosophy.” This philosophy covers a sense of healthy living. Vitamins produced by him take care of the health of the people irrespective of their religion cast, creed and country. As Guru Nanak has said that all people are one and this is what is taught by Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He also promoted a film to propagate Guru Nanak’s philosophy to love all religions as God is one for all. This film named ‘Nanak Shah Faqir’ was screened in many countries of the world and influenced millions of people. Dr. Lalwani stated at the time of premier “This is a very practical message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The message is of unity. The interfaith that we find all over the world is basically from the Sikh religion. The Sikh religion is a symbol of interfaith. The Guru Granth Sahib (The revered book containing the holy teachings of the Sikhs) is the foundation of interfaith.”
