Harpal Singh Kumar, the Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Research in U.K., was born in 1965. His parents had moved from Pakistan to India and stayed in refugee camps. Later they moved to England where his father did small jobs and eventually started his own grocery store. He attended St. Jones College, Cambrige and obtained Masters degrees in Arts and Engineering. Later on he added MBA degree which he obtained with high distinction as a Baker Scholar at Harvard Business School, where he won the Ford Prize and Wolfe Prize. After graduation, he was employed by McKinsey & Co. as a health care Consultant. In 1992, he was appointed Chief Executive of the Disability Charity The Papworth Trust. In 1997, he founded Nexan group (a Medical devices company). He joined Cancer Research Technology Ltd., as Chief Executive in 2002 and became Chief Operating Officer of Cancer Research, U.K. in 2004. In 2007, he became the C.E.O. Since then, his name has been associated with Cancer research. He is a trustee of the Francies Crick Institute and the Institute for Cancer Research. He is also the Chairman of Board of the National Cancer Research Institute and Cancer outcomes Strategy Advisory Group in England. He is fond of theatre and football. By holding such a high position in a foreign country, he has raised the status of Sikhs in the eyes of others. When the role model personality of this scientist was knighted in the 2016 New Year honors for services to Cancer research, it was a matter of pride for all of us.
