Ajit Pal Singh was born on 01.04.1947 in the famous village of Sansarpur, Punjab, which is known all over the World for giving maximum Hockey Players not only for the Indian Hockey Team, but also for Hockey Teams of other countries. This village near Jalandhar Cantonment of Punjab has proved its worth as the breeding ground for Hockey stars and Ajit Pal is one of those stars, who started playing hockey at a very young age. He played hockey for his school and later on for his Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, where he brought 3 victories for his College in the Punjab University College Tournaments. Earlier he played from full back and in the College, he shifted his posit ion to Centre half and became the captain of Punjab University Hockey Team in 1966 and represented the said team in 1968. He was captain of the Indian Team at the Hockey World Cup 1975 at Kualalumpur, Malaysia. He represented India in three Olympics from 1968 through 1976, winning bronze medals in his first two Olympic Games. He was appointed as India’s chef de mission for 2012 Summer Olympics. It was the first time that a sports person was given this opportunity, as earlier this positing went to either politicians or administrators. However he could not make it to the event due to severe spondlitis. Seven member IOA, India Olympic Association Committee selected in April 2012 Ajit Pal Singh as Chef de Mission for Indian Mission in London 2012 Olympics. He is also at present the organizing member of All India Balwant Singh Kapur Hockey Tournament for Mata Parkash Kaur Cup held every year for school boys under 16. He was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1970 and was also bestowed upon Padma Shri (1992). He is a definitely role model hockey player.
