Dr. Kirpal Singh

Description

Dr. Kirpal Singh, a great Sikh historian was born in 1924 in Village Ganaur, Gujrawala (Now in Pakistan). He got his Ph.D from Punjab University, Chandigarh and started his career as a historian by joining Khalsa College, Amritsar. When he wrote a book on partition of Punjab (1947), the same was considered as a research work of high standard. His interest has always been in writing about Sikh history, religion and culture. He had started with ‘Meharben Di Janam Saakhi’. When Punjab Govt. sent him to England for collecting material relating to the partition of Punjab, he met there all the concerned persons, who were associated with the partition in one or the other way. They included Lord Atlee, Lord Ismay, Sir Patrick Spence and Sir Francis Moody. He has mentioned about these meetings in his work, ‘Secret Documents on partition of Punjab’. In 1983, he again went to England and after collecting material wrote another work, ‘Select documents on partition of Punjab (1947)’. All these works show that he is an authority on that particular period of history for which he has made considerable research and has given us information regarding relevant documents and persons of that period. Even at this age of 92 years, he is the Director of Sikh History Sources Granth Compilation. In this project, a number of Sikh scholars are engaged in making research on the poetic history sources regarding Gurus. Dr. Kirpal Singh has been honoured by various organisations and at different platforms. Whereas, Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib honored him with the position of Prof. of Sikhism, the Punjab Govt. has given him the honour of Shromani Sahitkaar. Punjabi University has also honoured him with ‘Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Award’. He is really a wonderful role model for all those people, who believe in research.
