Historical Gurdwaras of Delhi

Another important city of Northern India is the Union Territory of Delhi, which is the capital of India. There are ten historical Gurdwaras in Delhi as are discussed hereunder.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib

Gurdwara sis Ganj is situated at Chandni Chowk near Red Fort in Delhi. This is the place where, the ninth Guru, Tegh Bahadar Ji was beheaded at the behest of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor at Delhi. The Guru scarified his life to protect Hindu religion, which was being destroyed by large scale conversions forced by the ruler, In fact, the Guru supported the principle of freedom of religion for all. This Gurdwara was first established in 1783 when General Baghel Singh conquered Delhi.

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib

Gurdwara Bangla Sahib is situated near Connaught Place and is associated with the visit of the 8th Guru Sri Harikrishan Sahib Ji who stayed here. As an epidemic was taking the life of large number of people of Delhi at that time, the Guru with his spiritual message and fresh water from a pool situated herein, healed many of them. Even today, the people have faith in water from that pool and accept it as Amrit. This was one of the seven Gurdwaras built in 1783 following the victory of Sikhs over Delhi

Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib

This Gurdwara situated near Parliament House was also first built in 1783 when the Sikhs defeated the Mughal Emperor of Delhi. When the ninth Guru became martyr, his headless body was brought here by a devotee Lakhi Shah Vanjara, who was living at this place. He cremated the body of the Guru at this place.

Gurdwara Mata Sundri Ji

This Gurdwara is situated on Deen Dyal Upadhaya Marg. Just adjoining to Urdu Academy. When the family of Guru Gobind Singh ji separated from him, Mata Sundri Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji came to Delhi and stayed here. It is from this place that Mata Sundri Ji managed the Panthak affairs after Guru Gobind Singh Ji had left for his heavenly abode.

Gurdwara Bala Sahib

This is the place where Guru Harkrishan Sahib, during his tour to Delhi, left for his heavenly abode, Before that, he had already informed the Sikhs of the presence of his successor by saying ‘Baba Bakala’. This is also the place of Cremation of Mata Sunder Kaur Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji

Gurdwara Nanak Piao

This Gurdwara in North Delhi near Subzi Mandi commemorates the event of Guru Nanak’s visit to Delhi. He stayed here in June 1505 and served water to the people from a well, which can still be visited at the site of Gurdwara.

Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila

This Gurdwara has historical importance as both Guru Nanak Dev Ji and later on Guru Hargobind Sahib, in the course of their visits to Delhi stayed here. It is situated on the right bank of river Yamuna opposite Timarpur coloney. The name Majnu is that of a Muslim hermit, who meditated at this place and was blessed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Gurdwara Moti Bagh

This Gurdwara is associated with Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He camped here, when he came to Delhi in response to the request made by Prince Muazzam in 1707. He shot an arrow from this place to Red Fort to announce his arrival. The Gurdwara is situated now on ring road in Delhi near Dhoula Kuan.

Gurdwara Damdama Sahib

Located near Humanyu’s Tomb on the outer Ring Road, this Gurdwara commemorates the event of a meeting between Guru Gobind Singh Ji and that time emperor of Delhi Bahadur Shah.

Gurdwara Baba Banda Singh Bahadar

This Gurdwara is situated in Mehrauli area of Delhi. Baba Banda Singh Bahadar obtained martyrdom at this place along with his 4 years old son, Ajay Singh and 40 Sikhs. First, he was frightened by killing his son before his eyes, then the heart of the child was pushed into his mouth. However, when Banda Singh Bahadar did not give in and refused to accept Islam, he was skinned alive and his body was pierced with ret hot rods and finally cut limb by limb. This historical Gurdwara in memory of his martyrdom has been constructed only a few years back. The 300th Martyrdom day of Baba Banda Singh Bahadar was observed in June 2016.
