Nihangs

Whereas, the tenth Guru sent some persons to achieve scholarly knowledge, a large number of Sikhs who learned the use of weapons, horse riding and became a part of Guru’s beloved forces came to be known as Nihangs. They remained with the Guru and fought battles for him. When Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji left for his heavenly abode, the Nihangs with him at Nanded established their centres both in Punjab as well as at Nanded. At the crucial period of Sikh history, when the Sikh army under the joint command of Nawab Kapur Singh was constituted, the Nihangs formed two groups, Buddha Dal and Taruna Dal. Buddha Dal consisted of the elderly people and Taruna Dal was comprised of young Sikhs. The brave Nihangs had fought in Vadda Ghalughara and Chhota Ghalughara. Presently, Buddha Dal as well as Taruna Dal have further split into various groups. All the groups are controlling certain Gurdwaras in and outside Punjab. The main group of Buddha Dal is known as Shiromani Panth Akali Buddha Dal and its headquarters are at Gurdwara Ber Sahib, Chawani Buddha Dal, Yaadgar Baba Deep Singh Ji Shaheed, Sri Damdama Sahib, Bathinda, Punjab-151001.
