Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin

Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin, a surgeon and pioneer in the field of liver transplantation, was born on 5th January 1963. He had his education at Modern School (New Delhi), All India Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh. As he had a specialization for Liver ailments, he under took First successful cadaveric liver transplant in India in 1998. Similarly he transplanted left lobe and right lobe in 1999 and 2000 and also succeeded in long distance cadaveric Liver Transplant in which the liver was flown in from Chennai and transplanted in Delhi in 1999. He was also successful in performing a combined liver and kidney transplant in India in 1999. From 2001 to mid-2010, he established a big liver transplant center at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. However, in June 2010, he moved to Medanta-The Medicity, Gurgaon to start a new center. Medanta at a current bed strength of 925 (and soon to be 1500) is one of the largest and the most modern tertiary care hospitals in the country. Here, Dr. Soin has established a 150-bed (including 36 Liver ICU beds) dedicated Liver Treatment facility, carrying out 250 liver transplants and hundreds of complex liver and biliary tract surgeries every year. He is a role model surgeon in the field of liver problems as he has performed highest number liver transplantation in the country and ranks among the highest in the word. Further he has handled different kinds of emergency situations like the case of oldest recipient (78 years) as well as of the youngest child. Undoubtedly, he is one of the few doctors in the world who perform such complicated operations with success rate around 90 percent. His team led by him even goes to neighboring countries for training the doctors and for delivering lectures on this subject. Dr. Soin has published more than 110 research papers and book chapters, and delivered more than 750 invited lectures and papers all over the world. He is also the Editor of India’s first comprehensive book on his field called “Liver Transplantation” which has been published by Elsevier. The book has sold over 15,000 copies. Dr Soin serves on the committees of all the important National and International societies, as well as on the National Advisory Board in Liver Transplantation. He is a regular Faculty member and speaker (often the only one from India) at most world fora in Liver Transplantation such as ILTS, AASLD, APDW, IHPBA, IASGO, APASL, Asian Living Donor Liver Transplant Group and Asia Pacific Organ Transplant Forum & many more. For his peerless contribution, he has been honored with many awards including national award for the best Clinician, Swasth Bharat Samman Award for excellence in Medicine, Medical Statesman of the Year 2010 and Padma Shri in 2010 for pioneering the development of Liver Transplantation in India. Thus, with his rare ability in this field and his honorable position in this regard, he emerges as a role model in the international medical world.
