Description

Bhai Gurmej Singh, a renowned Gurbani Singer and preacher of Sikh Religion, was born on 10.09.1940 in Village Bajirpur, Distt. Nawanshahar, Punjab. He was only eight years old, when due to small pox, he lost his vision. However, considering his inclination towards Gurbani, he was admitted in Central Khalsa Yateem Khana, Amritsar for learning Gurbani singing. Sant Baba Dal Singh and Bhai Harnam Singh Jogi helped him in imparting Gurbani Keertan training. He also learnt brail and started reciting Keertan at Gurdwara Nanaksar, Verka, Amritsar in 1958. He performed Keertan duty from 1960 to 1971 at a Gurdwara in Dehradun, and thereafter, he became so popular that he was given the services of a Hazoori Ragi at Sri Harimandar Sahib, Amritsar. He remained a Hazoori Ragi from 1971 to 1998. During this period, he became a known figure throughout the World and since then he has been giving Gurbani Keertan programmes at different places in the World. He has been honoured as a Shromani Gurbani Singer by various Organisations including Chief Khalsa Deewan, SGPC, DSGMC and Bhasha Vibhag, Punjab Govt. In addition to being a great Gurbani Singer and preacher, he has immortalized himself by rendering invaluable services to the blind people. He has been actively associated with Bharat Netrheen Sewak Samaj, Ludhiana and Bibi Bhani Istri Netrheen Keertan Te Sikhlai Kendra, Chheharta, which was founded by him for the welfare activities for the blind people. His greatest contribution in this regard is the completion of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in brail script. He had started this task in 1969, when he presented the divine composition of Sukhmani Sahib in brail. Afterwards, he completed other compositions from time to time and ultimately he completed the entire Bani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in 2013 and presented the same in 18 Volumes. This was a historic task for which he will always be remembered. He is still working on his new project of completing the compositions of Bhai Gurdas Ji. He is really a role model for all those Gurbani Singers, whom he inspired and who are now holding top positions. These great singers of Gurbani include Bhai Kirpal Singh, Bhai Jagtar Singh, Bhai Gurbachan Singh, Bhai Shoukeen Singh, Bhai Jagdeep Singh, Bhai Amarjeet Singh (All Hazoori Ragi) and Padamshree Bhai Nirmal Singh. Presently, he is also holding the position of Chief Administrator of Netrheen Sangeet Vidhalya, Sri Anandpur Sahib.
