Bhai Mahinder Singh is one of the most familiar names among the Sikhs of the world as he has won name and fame in the field of sewa through an organization named Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha,
which has its Head Office in Birmingham, U.K. He was born on 31st March 1939 in Kenya (East Africa).
He had his early education in Nairobi and proved to be an excellent student. For higher studies, he went to
U.K. and got his degree as Civil and Structural Engineer. He worked on various projects in U.K., Africa and
India. In addition to his professional activities, he was mainly dedicated to work for the Sikh community.
He assisted the Sikh community in different parts of Africa in the construction of Gurdwaras.In 1989, he
associated himself with Bhai Sahib Bhai Naurang Singh Ji and devoted his life to full time service of the
community. Bhai Naurang Singh Ji was the leader of the Jatha which was further associated with various
projects undertaken by Sant Baba Puran Singh Ji. Bhai Mahinder Singh, while working in Africa used to visit
Baba Puran Singh both in Kenya and then in England as dedicated member of Babaji’s sangat. When Bhai
Naurang Singh Ji passed away in 1985, Bhai Mahinder Singh took keen interest in completing the ongoing
project of U.K. sangat of re-gliding Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. Since then Bhai Sahib has been actively
working for all the projects undertaken by the organization and after Sant Baba Puran Singh, the founder
of the organization, he is now the mukh sewadar of the organization. He has played a highly significant
role in strengthening interfaith relationship with all the religions. Bhai Sahib has received many honours
and awards. Now, the organization being a registered charity has opened many Gurdwaras, Educational
institutions and service projects at different places in the world. The funds for the charity work are raised
from voluntary donation. The services provided are all free. One of the services is baptizing the Sikhs in
Gurdwaras and putting them on projects relating to service of humanity irrespective of casts, creeds and the
religion of the people. Bhai Sahib is a selfless religious visionary leader propagating peace, serving society
through spiritual inspiration, infrastructure creation, heritage conservation, interfaith engagement and
promoting values-led education. As chairperson of GNNSJ, one of the UK’s largest Sikh faith registered
charities, he is engaged in an astounding range of civic and spiritual initiatives. He is respected as a bridgebuilder within communities in the local and global, secular and spiritual, intra and interfaith contexts. In
2013, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI bestowed a Papal Knighthood of ‘Saint Gregory the Great’ upon Bhai
Sahib for his interfaith work in the UK and around the world. In 2014, he was awarded the highly coveted
Guru Nanak Interfaith Peace prize by Hofstra University, New York. In May 2015 Bhai Sahib was honoured
with OBE from the Prince of Wales is recognition of his unstinting and inexorable work over 40 years to
promote peace and co-existence by bringing people of different faiths together to contribute to the common
good of humanity.
