Description

  1. Born and brought up at the village of Barundi (Distt. Ludhiana, Punjab), Charan completed his MSc in Physics from Punjabi University before completing his MSc in Energy & Environment from Cranfield University, Bedfrodshire, UK.
  2. Charan became the first Turban wearing Sikh to join the Environment Management Division of the UK Government’s Environment Agency in 1999 and later he was appointed as Senior Distt. Environment Officer (first Minority Ethnic to serve at this position in Anglian Region) with a lead role in enforcing Agricultural and Waste Environmental Regulations in three districts.
  3. He has served as a local councillor for over 18 years. Currently serving as Councillor for Sharnbrook Council in Bedfordshire where ethnic monitory population is less than 0.5%. Also he became the first Turban wearing Sikh Councillor for Kempston Town and was elected twice as Kempston Town Councillor in an area where total ethnic minority population was less than 5% at that time. Founder and Chairman of SEVA Trust UK which is a registered charity in the UK and registered Public Charitable Trust in India. SEVA Trust is helping students from underprivileged families to gain quality education and also working on Health and Environmental projects in England and in India. Working closely with a wide range of charitable organisations (Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, Christian & many others) played a key role in raising significant funds for over 20 charities in the last 20 years.
  4. First Asian& first Sikh to run London Marathon for UK’s leading and the oldest disability charity – Papworth Trust, Cambridge and raised significant funds for disable people.Played an instrumental role in setting up the first Sikh temple & Community Centre in Kempston (Bedfordshire) that offers a wide range of free facilities to the local community.

Awarded British Asian ‘Pride of Britain’ 2013 Award in an event held at the House of Commons for his Outstanding Community & Charity Work.Awarded ‘The Mayor’s Award for Citizen of the Year’ 2002 for his outstanding charity &community work in Bedfordshire.Played leading role in setting up free advice surgeries for local communities on immigration, legal, education &career and other general matters.
  2. Lead a number of environmental campaigns raising awareness regarding protection of environment (soil, air & water).A fully qualified Yoga Teacher and a regional Coordinator for UK’s biggest Yoga charity that offer completely free yoga classes. Charan has been conducting free yoga classes for the last 8 years and helped over 1500 people with healthy living and yoga techniques.An active UNISON member (UK’s biggest Public Sector union) and serving as H&S Rep and Branch Welfare Officer
  3. Played key role in setting up free help facilities for Indian students studying in the UK.Served in many school governing bodies, local, regional and national committees (too many to include names for all), all of Charan’s community service is selfless service (Seva), all unpaid voluntary services in addition to his a full time job and family commitments.
    He passionately believes in equality and social justice, education opportunities for all and environmental sustainability. To accomplish so many great things in different fields in the UK in his young age whilst retaining his Sikh identity & values and his connectivity with Indian culture and heritage is truly commendable. He is a great all-rounder and a superb role model for all.
