Charanjit Singh Atwal

Charanjit Singh Atwal, the Speaker of the present Punjab Legislative Assembly was born on 15.03.1937 in Montgomery (Now in Pakistan). After partition, the family shifted to Ludhiana, from where S. Atwal graduated from GGN Khalsa College and then obtained his LLB Degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh. He started his political career by becoming MP in 1985 and since then he has not only been a member of Lok Sabha for 20 years, but also served as Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. He has been an active and high positioned member of Shromani Akali Dal and during Emergency, he along with other Akalis were jailed for two years from 1975-1977. S. Charanjit Singh Atwal is very popular among the people, particularly those belonging to lower strata of society as he has always worked for their welfare. He was a Chairman of the Committee on Welfare of Schdule Caste, Schedule Tribes and Backward Classes from 1997-2000. His popularity rests upon his sweet and helping nature and humility. His honest political career and his qualities of an excellent person make him a role model.
