Dr. Daljit Singh

Son of Dr. Sahib singh, (1892-1977) a great Sikh scholar, grammarian, author and theologian, Dr. Daljit Singh, born on 11.10.1934, is a world renowned figure in the field of Ophthalmology. After completing his DOMS in 1969, he gained professional experience on the faculty of Medical College, Amritsar and Patiala. In the course of his practice, he introduced a number of innovative techniques. By introducing Lens Implantation in India in 1976, he came to be known as the father of Lens Implant Surgery in India. Further, he introduced Singh-worst Iris Claw Lens in 1979, which was not even introduced in U.S.A. for the next 18 years, and this fact is now accepted worldwide. He was also the first to start Iris Claw Lens surgery. Whereby he developed artificial Cornea called Singh-worst Keratoprosthesis. In respect of ParAlimbal Keratoprosthesis technique (1981), he has, perhaps the largest experience in the world. Some further innovative steps taken by him in respect of Glucoma are as follows:-
  1. Transciliary Filtration for intractable Glucoma, trans. Ophth. SOC of U.K., 1979
  1. Microterphine Operation for Glaucoma. Proceedings of International Congress of Ophthalmology
  2. Trans-Ciliary Filtration using Fugo plasma knife (2001), it drains the poste-rior chamber. The technique was FDA approved in 2004.
  3. Micro-track Filtration (2004) – using Fugo blade, it creats a 150 Micron track into the anterior chamber, it is a latest traumatic operation for Glaucoma.
During the 50 years of his rich experience in the field of Ophthalamology, Dr. Daljit Singh added to his qualification, contributed chapters and articles to world renowned publications, presented such publications at National and International Conferences and trained more that 550 Eye Surgeons on the art of Lens implantation. He founded Indian Intraocular Implant and refractive Society and remained its President for a number of years. He is also the member of All India Ophthalmology Society and International Intraocular Implant Club. He has been the editor of Tropical Ophthalmology and Associate Chief Editor of annals of Ophthalmology, U.S.A. His wonderful contribution in this field has brought him many awards and honours including Padamshree by the Govt. of India (1987), B.C. Roy Award (1994) and World Eye Foundation Hampton Roy Award (1996). He has also been conferred Life Time Achievement Award by various Organisations like Punjab Ratan Award (1999), Bombay Ophthalmology Society Life Time Achievement Award (2013) and Assoc. Community Ophthalmology India Life Time Achievement Award (2014). He has written in this language both poetry (Dharti Trihaee (1973), Sidhre Bol (2002) and Bawre Bol (2005) and prose (Dooja Paasa (2010), Sacch Di Bhaal Wicch (2011), Badi Di Jarh (2013), and also books on his subject of Ophthalmology named as Naroi Akkh (1963) and Netar Roge (1973). Dr. Sahib is a true Sikh as he possese various qualities of a gursikh like knowledge, truthfulness, honesty, dedication, humanity and a helping attitude for all.
