Dr Harjinderpal Singh Walia

Dr Harjinderpal Singh Walia, a notable multimedia journalist of Punjab, was born on July 27, 1957 to sardarni Manjit Kaur and S Harjit Singh Walia (an employee of Punjab Police) in district Ludhiana.

Dr Walia remained excellent in studies, sports and extra curricular activities throughout his academic career. But more importantly, it was his journalistic abilities, marked by the gift of gab and oratory skills that brought out the best in him during his graduation at Govt college Malerkotla. Even while studying in the Mahatma Gandhi senior secondary school, Ahmedgarh, his literary activities like writing articles,participation in debates and holding of posts like secretary of school Sahitya Sabha were all indicative of his brilliant future in the field of journalism. His editing of college magazine ‘Satluj’ and then a bi-monthly ‘Parinda’ were facilitating steps on his march towards his goal.
While pursuing his Masters in journalism from PAU Ludhiana, Dr Walia was editing one monthly magazine ‘Munch’ and was working as a correspondent for the Tribune group. He completed his PhD from Guru Nanak Dev University and started his teaching career as a lecturer in Journalism at Punjabi University Patiala in the year 1989. He rose to the post of the head of the department of journalism and mass communications in 2005. Looking at his passion for teaching, he was appointed director of the university‘s IAS training centre which delivered excellent results under his visionary guidance. He has contributed a large number of articles for Indian and foreign media, given programs on Indian and foreign electronics media and has written a good number of books. His column ‘Hashiye de aar paar’ has been published for more than twelve years in ‘Ajit weekly’ which is very popular in the USA and Canada.

One of his books, ‘Punjabi fairs and festivals’ in English is a part of syllabus in schools in British Columbia in Canada. He is also a notable motivational speaker. 
Dr Walia’s two programs on CHARDIKLA Time Tv, namely Khabar te nazar Harjinder walia show and Charcha are very popular among the people, both in India and North America. His analysis of the news and discussion of the topical issues speak volumes for his ability as a journalist. He is a role model not only because of his success in both teaching and practising journalism in all forms, but also because he has maintained a high standard of Punjabi journalism with his qualities of vast knowledge, clarity of issues, truthfulness, boldness, investigating skill and a confident and effective way of communication. 
Happily married to Swaranjit kaur, they have two sons. The elder son with his family is settled in Canada. The younger son has published two novels, namely, Butahri- the nation awaits its wizard king and The Perfect Paramour. He has also worked as a correspondent for the Times of India group. The walia family is living in Patiala.
