Dr. Inder Mohan Singh

Dr. Inder Mohan Singh, a great scientist and one of the foremost scholars and preachers of Sikhism, was born in Punjab, India. He studied at the Doon School in Dehra Dun and did his B. Tech (Hons) in Electronics from IIT, Kharagpur. After shifting to USA he added to his qualification by doing MSEE from Polytechnic Institute of New York and Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees in computer science from Yale University. During his service career, he served on the boards of several high-tech companies. He was the Chairman of Lynux Works and was CEO until 2006, founded Excelan, and served as its chairman, CEO and President. He was also a co-founder of Kalpana, one of Cisco’s early acquisitions. However he not only proved to be a scientist, but also a scholar and a great religious preacher.

When Chardi Kala Foundation came into being, he was appointed as a founder chairman of this organization. The creation of this foundation is a joint initiative, rather a partnership between Nishaan-Nagaara of New Delhi and the California-based Chardi Kalaa Foundation. This collaboration is an attempt to formally create structures and mechanisms to celebrate Sikhi’s global presence and bridge the inevitable divide that geography creates. The key objectives of the Chardi Kalaa Foundation are to promote understanding of Gurbani and core Sikh values, particularly to Sikh youth in America and the diaspora, as well as to non Sikhs, as also to work with and support other Sikh organizations, enhancing Chardi Kalaa of the Sikh community. Dr. Sahib, being an ardent Sikh, and also a science scholar, has always emphasised upon a relationship between Science and Sikhi. In other words Sikhism is a scientific religion which explains everything in a logical way. For example, It specifically raises questions about many widely held beliefs to point out their irrationality. “The Earth is said to be supported by a bull. What a load the bull must bear? But there are countless earths beyond this one – what supports them all?” (Japuji). Thus, according to Dr. Sahib, The laws of nature are a manifestation of the Divine Hukam, and a source of awe and wonder (vismaad). For a Sikh, any new discovery made by science is a celebration of the marvels of God and his creation, an affirmation of His Glory’. Explaining the religion on scientific lines makes Dr. Sahib a great preacher and a role model for all others who adopt irrational interpretations and explanations which fail to satisfy the younger generation. He writes a number of articles for different magazines and journals including Nishaan. He also delivers lectures on various topics at various seminars and discussions. A number of recordings of his lectures are available for the guidance of the people who want to understand Sikhism and its concepts. He has also served on the boards of some other Sikh nonprofit organizations like SALDEF and the Sikh Foundation. May God bless him with good health and bibek- Budh so that he may continue to serve the people in general and his co-religionists in particular.
