Dr. Jodh Singh

Dr. Jodh Singh, one of the most educated philosophers, scholars and writers on Sikhism, was born on 15th May 1942. He holds masters degree in Philosophy, Hindi and English, and also a doctorate on ‘Guru Nanak’s Thought in the light of Sidh Gosti’ from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He has considerable teaching experience which includes teaching graduates & Post Graduate Classes (January 1977 to March 1983) and teaching Sikh Religion and Philosophy in Punjabi University Post-Graduate classes (From 1983 to 8.11.2001). He also Guided and supervised a number of scholars for Ph.D. degree and M.Phil degree. Presently, he is Professor of Sikhism and Editor-in-Chief, Encyclopaedia of Sikhism, Punjabi University, Patiala, INDIA. In view of his high qualification, teaching and research experience he is holding a number of prestigious positions in academic and professional bodies. Thus, he is Member, Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi.(Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India), Dean, Faculty of Humanities & Religious Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dean, College Development Council, Punjabi University, Patiala, Head of Department of Religious Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala, Member, Faculty of Humanities & Religious Studies, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Member,Research Evaluation Committee for Re-employed Teachers, Punjabi University, Patiala, Member Syndicate, Punjabi University, Patiala and Member Academic Council, Punjabi University, Patiala.
Dr. Sahib is a great role model not merely because of his superb learning but also because he has used his knowledge and experience in promoting and propagating Sikh religion by translating Bhai Gurdas’s Varan in Hindi and English, Dasam Granth in Hindi and English and Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Hindi in devnagari along with an introduction to Sikh Religion (82 pages) and major hymns of the holy Granth. He has attended various national and international Seminars and presented papers focussing the Sikh Religion and Philosophy. One such seminar was organised by Guru Gobind Singh Foundation, Maryland (USA), The papers were presented at Los Angles, San Jose, and Fresano in May, 1995. He also participated in the World Punjabi Conference held at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee U.SA. In July, 1997 and Read a paper on ‘Guru Nanak: His Vision and Accomplishments’ in Seminar on ‘The Founders and Shapers of the World’s Religions’ organised by Inter – Religious Federation for World peace on November 25 -29, 1997 at Washington D.C. U.S.A. He represented Indian council of Philosophical Research(HRD), Ministry of India) and went to Paris under Indo -French Exchange programme for one month (November, 2000) to work on a short project: “Dialogical Human Reality : Indo-French Perspective.” Whereas, he has written a good number of books on sikh philosophy (eg The Religious Philosophy of Guru Nanak (English) and Socio-Ethical Philosophy of Guru Angad Dev), he has also written on MultifaithSociety, Contemporary Issues& Concerns. That is why he has been nominated as National Lecturer By Indian Council of Philosophical Research (HRD Ministry of India) to deliver lectures in various Indian Universities on Philosophy in general and Sikh Philosophy in particular. He is presently living with his family at Patiala.
