Gulbarg Singh Basi

Description

Gulbarg Singh Basi is a renowned Sikh community leader of USA, who was born at Village Kharaudi, Distt. Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India, in 1941. Being a son of an Airforce officer Gulbarg Singh, moved from city to city and school to school every two years or so while growing up. During Schooling Gulbarg Singh was part of the High School and College football teams wherever he went. He graduated from Jammu & Kashmir University in 1963 and moved to USA in 1964. Although, like many other persons he had to work hard for an earnest living, his leadership qualities enabled him to lead the students as President of International Students clubs and Indian Community as President of India Associations in various cities of USA.
He availed of these opportunities to propagate Sikh values and culture among the new generation of Sikhs as well as other people living at those places. He organized Vaisakhi cultural functions and lead a bhangra group for 31 years (1966-1997) which made him very popular among the Sikhs and the non Sikhs. He became a role model for all those who love Sikh culture and want to promote it outside India. His services for his community extended way beyond cultural activities to uniting the Sikh community for higher causes. He served as President and Chairperson of the Sikh Organizations many a times starting 1976 to 2006. During this time Gulbarg Singh, as a president of the Sikh Study Circle in Atlanta, was instrumental in building the first Gurdwara Building in Atlanta. He has continued to service local Atlanta Sikh community with or without any titles. He got involved with World Sikh Council – America Sikh Region in 2010 and was assigned to develop a Conflict Resolution Service for the Gurdwara Sangat. Then starting 2013 Gulbarg Singh was selected to help form a Global level Sikh Organization. Gulbarg Singh was selected to be the President of the Global Sikh Council with membership of fifteen National level organizations representing Sikh community from different countries of the world. This role model gursikh continues to lead Global Sikh Council and is doing a wonderful job for bringing unity among the Sikhs of the World. Where ever there is some Panthak issue, he takes a stand and makes efforts for uniting the Sikhs on that particular issue. For example, he has made clear that The Global Sikh Council stands with the principal of “ONE GRANTH, ONE PANTH” and fully supports all organizations and individuals that believe in this principal. When the Malaysian Sikh Council and American Sikh Council raised their voice against installation of Sri Dasam Guru Granth Sahib along with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at some places, he strongly supported them. He is also holding Global Sikh Council meetings in various parts of the World for discussion on such Panthak issues which are relevant for all the Sikhs. This role model community leader has now called the general body meeting of the GSC from 24th to 26th March 2017 in Malaysia. Let us hope that such meetings will help to resolve the various Panthak issues and will bring a sense of unity and solidarity among all the Sikhs of the world. S.
