Gurdwara Janam Asthan Guru Nanak Dev Ji

This is the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It is believed that Baba Dharam Chand son of Baba Lakhmi Das (son of Guru Nanak Dev ji) had originally constructed one room structure known as “Kalu ka Kotha”, literally “house of (Mahita) Kalu”, father of Guru Nanak. Later it came to be known as “Nanakayan”, literally “home of (Guru) Nanak”. The present Gurdwara was got constructed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839), at the instance of Akali Phula Singh and Baba Sahib Singh Bedi. The Maharaja also made an endowment of about 20,000 acres of land for the maintenance of the Guru ka Langar. Before SGPC took control of the management of this Gurdwara, it was being managed by the Udasis. Presently PSGMC manages the Gurdwara under the supervision of the Waqf Board. Although, the holy shrine is visited by lakhs of devotees from other countries including India at all times of the year, the holy shrine is mainly in news at the time of celebrations of Guru Nanak’s Parkash Utsav. It had also come into news when a golden palanquin (Palki Sahib) was brought from India to be presented by DSGMC.
