H.S. Chatha

H.S. Chatha was born in 1935 at Chak No 2, Tehsil Phalia, District Gujarat, Pakistan. After doing his graduation from Dayal Singh College Karnal, he got his law degree and joined legal profession as an Advocate. He started his political career after joining Congress Party. In 1972, he was elected to Haryana assembly for the first time. He was elected again in 1987, 2004 & 2009. During Congress Governments In Haryana he held various ministerial positions such as Minister for Irrigation and power 1972-1977, Agriculture Minister and then Finance minister. However, he has been highly popular as a speaker of Haryana Vidhan Sabha. In 1987, he became the speaker for the first time. In 2005, he was again made speaker for the second time. In October 2009, he was elected speaker for the 3rd time by a unanimous choice. His popularity rests upon his qualities of kindness, generosity and his nature of helping poor and the down trodden. With such a popularity and spotless political career, he emerges as a role model politician.
