Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh, presently, the President of Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council, was born on 8th October 1943. He was one of the founders (among other founders were S. Mohan Singh, presently doing Sewa in USA and S. Kulwinder Singh of Delhi) who started Nishkam Sikh Welfare Council and as the founder President gave the organization, a direction to serve the community, particularly to provide relief and rehabilitation to the economical weaker section of the society including the victim of 1984 riots of Delhi and other parts of the country. He has put in 40 years of selfless service by working in this organization and now in the capacity of its President for the fourth time is still a moving spirit and a source of inspiration and guidance to one and all. Beleiving in the three basics of Guru Nanak’s teachings Kirat Karo, Vand Chhako and Naam Japo, he has always emphasized upon simple living and service of mankind.
The NGO with which he is associated serves many sections of the society including orphans, widows, senior citizen and students, who are helped in their education and career progress, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion. He also takes keen interest in other Sikh activities and programmes with a view to promote the interest of his religion and co-religionists. For example when Punjabi Suba movement was going on, he actively participated and spend five months in jail. The Indian Express and BBC featured him for the selfless services which Nishkam has been doing for the upliftment of the marginalized. He was chosen as the member of the Executive Committee of World Sikh Council, and invited to participate in the Panthak Congregation called by the then Sri Akal Takht Jathedar S. Manjit Singh Ji. He is also a social reformer and has taken initiative for promoting many social issues in the community. For example, the step regarding austerity measure on the occasion of marriages / bhog ceremonies was taken up in 1982 and was adopted by a large number of Sikhs during following years. The Gursikh role-model is living in Delhi along with his wife Jasbir Kaur, who lends him all support and corporation for his social service activities and the family of his sons.
