Harcharan Singh Chawla

Harcharan Singh Chawla was born on 20th August 1934 in Peshawar (now in Pakistan). After partition, his family headed by his father Late S. Man Singh Nirman shifted to Delhi, where he along with his brother and sister got education. He got his Master’s degree in history in 1959 from Punjab University. He Joined Central Secretariat Service and rose to the post of controller of Imports & Exports (Govt. of India). During his service he assisted his father in the publication of a monthly magazine, The Kesar Kiari. It helped him in developing the attitude of reading, writing about and understanding Gurbani with which this magazine in four languages is fully related. After his retirement, when his father passed away, he made up his mind to continue the publication of this Gurmat Journal. Thus, under the patronage of some families like Ayur Parivar, Bawa Parivar (Bawa Masala Co.), Blue Heaven Parivar (S. Charanjeet Singh), Simco, Kasid’s Parivar and some other devoted Sikhs. He continued to publish it every month and this effort is going on till today. S. Harcharan Singh is a role model as after his distinguished career as a Govt. Officer, he has dedicated himself to this unique service. He has not only associated a good number of scholars’ from India and abroad to contribute their writings for the magazine, but has also been himself writing and explaining Gurbani through small write ups. This is, perhaps, the only magazine in four languages, viz, Punjabi, Hindi, English and Urdu, which contains articles and other material mainly dealing with Gursikh way of living. After the Death of his wife in 2008 S. Harcharan Singh is living in Delhi along with his sister Dr. Mohinder Kaur Chawla Reader, Delhi University (Retd.). She being a Sikh scholar herself is assisting her brother as a Managing Editor of said magazine. His email is kesarkiari@yahoo.com. His brother Dr. Jagmohan Singh Chawla is a Professor in York University Toronto (Canada). He is a great assistance in sending the articles of foreign Sikh scholars. His particulars are given in the index columns of Kesar Kiari. This is a Gurmat journal containing sacred Gurbani and Gurmaryada of Sikh way of life. It is like a bouquet of holy flowers and readers have been requested to give due respect to it.
