Gurdayal Singh

Hardeep Singh, a visionary and a devoted community leader, was born in 1964 at Chandigarh, and is now settled at SAS Nagar (Mohali). A fine art professional also inherited with Sikh martial art (Gattka) and theatre art utilised his skills for promoting Sikh culture. He started Sikh theatre repertory since 1986, produced dramas, light sight and sound shows on Sikh history, evolved and staged choreography of Sikh martial art in 1987, An icon as a Sikh actor he inspired a number of Sikh actors and directors of the day. A pioneer in realizing and making use of the electronic media to spread Sikh history and culture, he produced acted and directed a number of Sikh Movies since 1998. Being a professional in fine art his designs in shape of posters and greeting cards portraying Sikh children in traditional robes, along with Gurmat messages had special acclaim since 1990. In addition to his artistic talent, he performs Gurbani kirtan as nishkam sewa and is an impressive speaker on Sikhism. In recognition of his contributions in the Panthic sphere, he was elected as member SGPC in 1996, thus opening fresh avenues for him to serve his community. His vision and sincere approach gave him power to go tough against politicians controlling Sikh institutions. He defeated the powerful political parties twice with the popular support of Sangat and is an independent member in the house of SGPC. His significant role to compel the authorities to reverse the decision of handing over the control of Sri Darbar Sahib to Govt. and UNESCO in the name of heritage listing (dossier issue) is a life time achievement. His independent, bold and pro community views on Sikhism, social and political matters, gives him an edge over the conventional leadership. Thus, he is a wonderful role-model as a community leader of the Sikhs.
