Hardeep Singh Puri

Hardeep Singh Puri, an Indian Foreign Service officer 1974 batch, was born on 15th February 1952 in Delhi. His father was diplomat, and he attended boarding school in India as his father was posted in countries where there were no options for English-language education. He pursued Bachelor’s and postgraduate study at Hindu College, University of Delhi, and worked as a Lecturer at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. After joining Indian Foreign Service, he worked on many important positions in different countries like Brazil, Japan, Sri Lanka and United Kingdom. He became quite popular and well known among the people when he served as permanent representative of India to the United Nation from 2009-2013. He also served Chairman of United Nation Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee. After his retirement he joins International Peace Institute as a Senior Advisor in June 2013. Further, in January 2014 he joined BJP for BJP’s admirably approach to national party. S. Puri has recently released his book ‘Perilous Intervention-the Security Council and the Politics of Chaos’.
Based on his experiences in the UN and in the Indian Foreign Services, the book covers the consequences and the actions that lead to them, in some of the largest man-made disasters in the history of International Politics, such as – Iraq in 2003, Libya in 2011, Syria, Yemen and Ukraine. It also describes at length the inside stories and misdirection that lead to India’s own crisis with Sri Lanka. The book received extensive praise by the international community for the insight it provides into the working of the International Political community & especially the UN Security Council. S. Puri is still actively associated with international developments and is frequently invited to give his views on important matters (e.g. Surgical strike by India, US election 2016 etc.). He is a role-model because of his brilliant career and services rendered by him in different capacities raising thereby the prestige of those Sikhs who stick to their articles of faith. A turbaned Sikh occupying in such position definitely makes the people of Sikh community feel proud of him. The inspirations given by such like people impress a large number of youngsters and they start emulating him as a role-model. S. Hardeep Singh Puri is undoubtedly such a role-model.
