Harjeet Singh, the captain of Junior Hockey team that won the World Cup in December 2016, started playing hockey in 2004 at Kurali’s Gopal Hockey Academy before joining Surjeet Hockey Academy in Jalandhar in 2008. Then he joined the Punjab junior team which won the Junior National title in 2012&2013. That’s when Harjeet made his Junior National debut in 2012’s Sultan of Johar Cup. In 2013, Harjeet was claimed to be the most promising player of the Sultan of Johar Cup, under 21 Hockey tournament. This was his biggest achievement till date. He won a lakh in regard to his victorious squad. In 2014, in the Junior Men, Punjab outclassed Odisha by 6-2 in the finals and he was the man of the tournament. He climbed his way to success by beginning with the Punjab junior state team moved on to become the captain of the Indian Junior Men’s team and was also the youngest of the Delhi Waveriders. The pushing player who plays as midfielder was declared upcoming player of the year at the Hockey India annual awards ceremony. It was a life changing moment for him when he was awarded 10 lakh rupees on 26th of March 2016. However, his leadership qualities and skillful game were best projected when he led the team to the Junior World Cup and won it kindling great hopes of winning for tittle in future. He kept the team decipilined and each one of the players played his role to its perfection. The most impressive feature of his performance was the regularity at which he started counter-attacks. The speed with which he stole the ball of an opponent’s stick on numerous occasions showcased his presence of mind. India’s main strategy was to apply high pressure and catch the opponent off guard with counter-attacks. The captain proved to be the biggest weapon in this strategy, no wonder manager Roelant Oltmans couldn’t stop singing praises of this role model captain.
