Harpinder Singh Randhawa

Harpinder Singh Randhawa, an agricultural scientist and a renowned spring wheat and triticale breeder, based in Canada, was born on 10th December 1971 in Village Kala Afgana in the house of S. Harbhajan Singh Randhawa and Surinder Kaur (both were teachers). He started his education in his village and completed it with Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in agriculture from Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana. Being a meritorious student, he did a lot of research in the course of his study and got published research papers on growing wheat, rice and sugarcane. One of his papers was read in a conference on agriculture at Mexico. After moving to Canada in 1997. S. Randhawa got his Ph.D. on Plant sciences with a thesis on ‘Genetic and Molecular Studies of loose smutt resistance durum wheat’. Dr. Randhawa continued his research work and participated in many conferences and read his papers. He is a specialist in growing spring wheat. He has developed agronomically superior spring wheat cultivars for western Canada with superior end use quality and enhanced disease resistance to rust, Fusarumi head blight and common bunt. He has also made research on genomic tools for wheat improvement in Canada. He is affiliated with various agricultural societies of the world such as Crop science Society of America, Canadian Seeds Growers Association, and Canadian Wheat Improvement Network. His various research publications are being found useful for improving the quantity and quality of certain products including wheat. Being such a great Scientist in the field of agriculture (also the youngest Scientist of Indian origin in this field), he has raised the prestige of Sikhs all over the world. When, in June 2016 he was conferred upon the gold harvest award for innovation by the Deputy Agriculture Minister of Canada, he made all the Punjabi proud. He is confident that he will make some more innovations in the field of agriculture in the years to come.
