Inder Singh Anand

Description

  1. Inder Anand received his undergraduate education in India and a Ph.D. in cardiovascular physiology from Oxford University, England where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
  2. He later trained as a clinical cardiologist in London, and was a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, London, UK.
  3. In 1976 he joined the Departments of Cardiology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, India where he worked in two major areas:
  4. Congestive Heart Failure and High Altitude Medicine and Physiology.
  5. In the field of heart failure he made seminal contributions to the field of salt and water retention in patients with untreated heart failure. His work on High Altitude Medicine led to the discovery of two new syndromes in people living at high altitude; Infantile sub-acute mountain sickness in Tibet and Sub-acute adult mountain sickness in Indian soldiers posted at extreme altitude of Siachen Glacier.
  6. He pioneered the use of inhaled nitric oxide in the management of high altitude pulmonary edema.
  7. He also advanced the concept of adaptation by showing that Man and animals indigenous to high altitude are adapted and do not respond to hypobaric hypoxia by pulmonary vasoconstrictive.
  8. he showed that this is because these species lack vascular smooth muscle in the pulmonary arterioles, an autosomal trait in animals.
  9. In 1991, Dr. Anand moved to the USA and accepted the position of Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota, and Director of the Heart Failure Program at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.
  10. There he studied the cellular and subcellular mechanisms of heart failure and found that early in the natural history of heart failure, global left ventricular dysfunction occurs in presence of intact isolated myocyte function, underscoring the importance of ventricular remodeling in the pathogenesis of heart failure.
  11. He has been active in designing and conducting clinical trials in heart failure over the last twenty years.
  12. He has been a principal investigator in over 70 heart failure clinical trials, and member of steering and end-point committees of several of these international trials.
  13. He is member of the editorial board of several Journals and has authored over 320 peer reviewed scientific publications and has over 1,000 citations of his published work.
  14. He has received numerous honors, scholarship and fellowships including the 2010 AACIO Life Time Achievement Award, the 2011 University of Minnesota Innovation Award, and the 2011 Cardiological Society of India Life Time Achievement Award
