Isher Judge Ahluwalia

Isher Judge Ahluwalia, an Indian economist, was born on 1st October 1945 in Delhi. She did her M.A. from Delhi School of Economics and then went for research to USA. Her research, focussed upon urban development, industrial development, macro-economic reforms and social sector development issues in India got her a Ph.D. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After her marriage with another economist S. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, she remained with him in India and abroad holding some important positions like Chair Person, Board of Governors, Indian Council for Research on International Economic relations. She was also the Director and Chief Executive of this organization form 1998-2002. She was a member of the eminent persons Group which prepared report on the role of the Asian Development Bank form 2006-07. She also worked as the Vice Chairperson of Punjab State Planning Board from 2005-07. She has written a number of articles on Indian Economy. Her book Industrial growth of India : Stagnation since the mid 1960s was abjudged as the best book on Indian economy and she was given Bhatheja Memorial Award in 1987. In 2009 she was given Padma Bhushan for literature and education by Government of India. Her contribution as an economist distinguishes her as a role model in that field.
