SALDEF is the abbreviated form of an Organisation named as Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund. This Organisation takes care of the various needs of the Sikh Community living in U.S.A. Their mission is to empower Sikh Americans by building dialogue, deepening understanding, promoting civic and political participation and upholding social justice and religious freedom for all the Americans. SALDEF was founded in 1996 and since then, it has organized various programmes for achieving its laudable objects. SALDEF has also developed a first of its kind youth leadership initiative, Sikh lead which offers different programmes for Sikh American youth. It maintains a full time staff with officers in Washington, BC and Los Angeles, CA. There is a Board of Directors which works with Media experts and also volunteer organisors who have gone through SALDEF training programmes. Whereas on 13.05.2016, President Barrack Obama appointed SALDEF Co-founder and Chairman, S. Manjeet Singh to serve on the President’s Advisory Council, another person associated with SALDEF, namely, S. Jasjit Singh was also taken as Policy Advisor by President Obama in April, 2016.
S. Jasjit Singh, an American Sikh Role model obtained Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Business Administration from University of Illinois University (2000-2004). Then he worked as a consultant and Sr. Consultant with Deloitte, Greater Chicago area. He was taken as Associate Executive Director in April 2009 and was made as Executive Director in August 2012. When President Obama appointed him to the Advisory Council on faith based and neighbourhood partnerships, his duty as a member of their council was to advise the President on the steps which Govt. should take to reduce inequalities and create opportunity for all, particularly to meet the need of the low income and other undeserved persons. Jasjit Singh is an enthusiastic worker with an excellent quality of oration. He has always been quite alert in watching the interest of the people of his community. He attends interfaith gatherings and explains Sikh view points with a view to promote harmony and peace in the society. Jasjit Singh was married during this year and is leading the life of a Gursikh influceing thereby all the youngsters.
