Jatinder Singh Brar, the founder of Sharp Group of Industries, Amritsar, is an Engineer businessman by profession. However, he is much better known as an outstanding Punjabi playwright and a person who has dedicated his life to promote Punjabi theatre. When we consider the names of such persons after S. Gursharan Singh (Popularly Known as Bhai Ji), his name, figures prominently for his contribution in this field. He has spent not only most of his time, but also a Lion’s share of his earning in establishing and modernizing Punjabi Natshala, a theatre setup by him opposite Khalsa College, Amritsar, which provides free basic theatrical requirements for rehearsals and staging of high quality plays. After coming into existence of the same for the last thirteen years period people have witnessed more than 1200 performances of different plays staged by different theatre groups on its stage. Many prominent Directors have shown their worth through their theatrical skills on this stage. As a playwright, he has written a large number of plays including the outstanding ones like Lohe De Bhathi, Fasle, Payedaan, Kudesan, Sabaz Bagh, Mirch Masala etc. and among one act plays are Toya, Lucan Meeti, File Chaldi Rahi, Dormitory, Tash di Aadat, Armaan, Ahsaan, Ahsaas, Pehchan, Bin Bulae Mehmaan, Miza Saheban, Agni Parikheya and Armaan etc. in all these plays, he has dealt with the feelings, emotions and the problems of a common man, more so of miserable plight of the ordinary poor women. There is a satire on the prevailing system and an expression of a desire to reform the same. S. Jatinder Singh Brar is also an excellent human being, who is a role-model for a number of aspiring actors, directors and other persons who want to lead a useful and meaningful life. That is why he has been honoured at various platforms by different organizations. Whereas Bhasha Vibhag honoured him as a Shiromani Natakkar, Punjab Art Council gave him life time achievement award. He has been adjudged as the best play writer for a number of his plays. In addition, Guru Ram Das Society, Mohammad Rafi Memorial Society, Amritsar Heritage Society, Shaheed Memorial International Sewa Society, Missionary Educational Society, Virsa Vihar Society, Rotary Club, Amritsar and Kes Sambhal Parchar Sanstha have also honoured him. He has also been honoured with awards established after the names of S. Gursharan Singh and Balraj Sahni the leading theatre and film personalities of India.
