Management of Bangladesh Gurdwaras

All Gurdwaras in Bangladesh are managed by Gurdwara Management Board Bangladesh which operates from Kolkata. This board has always been attached to Takht Sri Patna sahib. Captain Bhag Singh was its first General Secretary, who did a lot of work for improvement in the gurdwaras in Bangladesh in all respects. The board had decided by a resolution that for the management of each of these Gurdwaras, local committees will be setup so that the Gurdwaras could operate in the right perspective. One committee was setup for Dhaka Gurdwaras, but, the members in this committee were non Sikhs. So far two Gurdwaras in Chittagong are concerned, a management committee of 11 persons (Sikhs) has already come into operation. For making this committee, one politician of Ruling party Mohiuddin Choudhury, who also remained Mayor of Chittagong for a long time, helped the Sikhs and approached the District Judge to substitute this committee instead of the earlier one which had no Sikh member. Now, the President of the Committee is S. Bhupinder Singh (M.: 00919815990979) and the Secretary is S. Mahinder Singh. S. Sukhvinder Singh is another important member of the committee looking after the accounts in the capacity of Treasurer. The Sikhs in Dhaka are demanding that a similar type of committee be setup for Dhaka’s Gurdwaras also. It is interesting to note that whereas in Dhaka there are around 50 Sikh families, in Chittagong, there is not even a single Sikh family living permanently. There are only four-five Sikh families living on the work permits and they are managing the Gurdwaras through committee constituted from themselves. In Dhaka, a good number of Hindu families are also supporting the Sikh families and the demand is to setup a national committee for all the Gurdwaras in Bangladesh. SGPC had also sent a delegation to Bangladesh to have a firsthand report about the Gurdwaras and their management in that country. Baba Sucha Singh, whose team is rendering Kar Sewa at all the Gurdwaras, is also keen that some suitable management be setup for these Gurdwaras as a lot of work needs to be done to preserve their properties, Guru’s relics and the programmes at the shrines by increasing the number of devotees. The need is to send more and more Jathas on all important occasions like Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Vaisakhi and other important Gurpurabs. It is also required that some Sikh families be settled there for permanent stay so that people visiting these Gurdwaras feel attended and welcomed for sharing the spiritual happiness.
